APICS Certifications

What is Certification?

APICS offers three internationally recognized certification programs, Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM), Certified in Integrated Resource Management (CIRM), and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP).  APICS certifications are recognized worldwide as standards of professional excellence and quality within the manufacturing and service industries.

Once you earn your CPIM designation, you are eligible to take your professional credentials to the next level with the Certified Fellow in Production and Inventory Management (CFPIM) program.  The CFPIM designation is awarded to an elite group of professionals who share their knowledge with others through presenting, publishing, teaching, and participating in other professional development activities.

To achieve the CPIM or CIRM Certifications you must pass five examinations for each certification.  The Phoenix Chapter of APICS currently conducts Certification Review Courses for the CPIM program only. The CIRM certification is being discontinued by APICS. CIRM examinations will continue to be offered until June 1, 2008 and candidates have until that date to pass the examinations they need to receive their certification. The Phoenix Chapter does not offer review courses for the CIRM certification.

The CSCP certification was established in 2006 and was created to meet the rapidly changing needs of the supply chain management field. To earn this certification you must pass one examination.

Benefits of Certification.

APICS certification programs open the door to job opportunities and career advancement.  According to a recent APICS Salary Survey, respondents with CPIM or Certified Integrated Resource Management (CIRM) credentials earned 15 percent to 23 percent more than non-certified professionals.  In addition, more Internet-savvy manufacturing companies are demanding APICS certification on applicant resumes.  On Monster.com, more than 61 percent of manufacturing jobs request APICS certification!

CPIM and CIRM examinations have received recommendations for credit by both the American Council on Education (ACE) and the New York State Board of Regents.  These credit recommendations are intended to guide participating institutions in granting college credit to students who pass CPIM or CIRM exams.

A Word about Membership.

When you join APICS you become a member of the national Association and a member of a local Chapter.  APICS and the Chapters charge lower rates for members for all testing, materials, seminars and courses.  If you have decided to pursue either of the certifications the first thing you should do is join APICS to get the benefits of professional membership and to be eligible for the discounts.  For example, the extra cost for non-members for just the five examinations will pay for a one-year membership in the Association and the Phoenix Chapter!  Additionally, the CPIM certification requires that you maintain this certification by achieving 75 points within a five-year period while the CFPIM certification requires 100 points. Professional Membership will earn you 30 of those points (6 per year). You are going to invest time and money in this certification process and you will want to keep it maintained.  So don’t delay and join today!

As a new member you can request a free copy of the 11th Edition of the APICS Dictionary – a $24.30* value.  You can also request the CD of the International Conference Proceedings held each October.  These are not sent out automatically.  Once you become a member, call APICS at 800-444-APICS (2742) to order.
